A to Z Challenge: H is for Hammer

H is For Hammer

Years ago my friend Darla told us about reading in the paper of an elderly woman who had murdered her husband with a hammer. When the police arrived at the home she was sitting on the porch waiting for them. When asked why, she responded, "For all the little things."

That phrase has become a code for the spouse and me.  We've been known to mumble "For all the little things," to each other when faced with frustration.  It's a way of letting the other know that we've reached a limit.  Through the years we've developed variations like,   "Where's the hammer"  or signaling with a hammering motion.  This year we will celebrate our 42nd anniversary, but I tell you, there are still some days that I'm looking for the hammer!

  1. Apparently that story has helped you both to relieve the frustrations of all the little things. If you allow them to build up you may use the hammer.

Teriffic post. I think I might use that same phrase.

  2. Wow, I never heard of that murder, but I think it's a perfect line for those days when the little things begin to take me over. They are usually not associated with the husband, however, so I'm not sure where I would apply the hammer. Good "H" for me to enjoy! :-)

  3. I do remember the incident. Yes, it's so much better to straighten out the details as they come up.

  5. I like the code word.

My sister and I periodically text each other with, "send the gun". That means a husband needs to be shot. So far we've only needed one gun between us. Once in a while one of us has to wait until the other is finished with the gun at her end.

  6. Well after 42 years I'd say you two are certainly doing something right! But this is marriage too right? Ebbs and flows over the course of time :-)

  7. I love it! It is the little things that really get to you after a while, isn't it?
