WTF Wednesday: Anonymous is Stalking Me

WTF Wednesday is a semi-regular feature of this blog. It documents the things that have made me pause, slap my forehead and say "What the f**k!" Well, that and I just like saying WTF. I'm retired. I don't have to watch what I say anymore. I'm not any one's role model.

I just put the picture of the dollar bill to taunt my new stalker. Apparently middle school students have found my blog. I wrote about an incident in the classroom here last Wednesday. Here are some of the messages that have been posted on my blog since then:

"Boner"

It is easy enough to erase the comments. But, for everyone who looks at teaching as an easy job, here's an example of the other side of the story. While we want to look at students as innocent children, and see our job as shepherding them into adulthood by teaching and encouraging them, the reality is that some of them are nasty pieces of work. Unfortunately, it looks like I had one of those kids in my classroom.

Okay, the smart ones in the crowd are asking, "How do you know it's a middle school student?" To which I reply.... clues!  The comment about zebras refers to a discussion in the classroom about zebra prints. (Yes, Nana was indulging in her love for fashion with an especially attractive zebra print jacket which some students thought was quite fashion forward.)

Dear Anonymous,
I don't have your dollar.  I left it in your teacher's desk with your name on it.  Your mother never came by to claim it.  Perhaps you should ask your teacher or your principal to return it to you.  I'm sending them a link to this post.  I'm sure they'll be interested in reading what you are posting online.  Your mother must be so proud!

Sincerely,
Your substitute

  1. Obviously since I retired I have lost the ability to read a calendar. So here is Wednesday's post a day early because I scheduled the publishing on the wrong day...WTF!

  2. Thank you.
Every now and then I forget why I dropped out of college rather than teach.

  3. I agree with you that there are some really mean kids out there, but that was after I left school. Never having been a teacher, I cannot imagine what it is like these days. It's obviously the Boner kid here, he left plenty of clues.

Who cares if you did it early or not? It's very interesting and a little sad, too. Thanks for sharing it with me.

  4. What?
    It's not Wednesday?
    Thank goodness.
Yup, you've discovered one of the downsides of retirement.

  5. Haaaaaaaaaaaa, you rock #1 Nana! I would die of fright standing before a classroom to teach, kids can be savage, especially in a pack. My baby sis' is a music teacher, she travels around the island schools - but the great thing about her job is she is only ever at the mercy of a handful of pupils, she's never tossed into a full class..

I have no idea how you guys do it.

  6. I didn't realize it was Tuesday until you pointed it out. I am very upset by this reaction by the student. You are so right. I've dealt with some pretty scary students in my day. I wonder how he found out about your blog. I hope the school deals with him appropriately.

  7. Oh, gosh. Lots of anger in the kid, plus embarrassment maybe. Glad you're retired.

  8. Your response made me laugh out loud. The writing of the kids made my stomach hurt - that they felt that it was okay to talk to you in that way.

  9. Oh man ... this kind of scares me actually. I hope it doesn't escalate any more than it has. Be safe; it is a scary world with kids like this out there.

  10. Yes, it's scary that these kids aren't all right...but it's even scarier that the best they can do as an insult is "FUCK YOU!" Damn. So many opportunities to be inflammatory and verbally abusive gone to the uncreative, unremarkable "Fuck You." So sad. They should make kids read Wilde and Shaw early and learn the art of insulting.

You're a tough lady and this is a great blog. So glad I came across it.

  11. Many children are the spawn of satan! (even a couple of my own). Here's to retirement!
    Happy Valentine's day!

  12. Good Morning! Happy V Day one day late. Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog.

This is an interesting piece of commentary and I like your approach to the attitudes you face(d). You are right, there are some "nasty piece(s) of work" out there. Unfortunately, it seems they are exponential these days. I blame the parents or lack thereof but that doesn't change the challenges they provide.

My husband is a former MSW who specialized in teenagers. When asked why he preferred working with teens to adults his reply was always the same, "There's still a chance to change the behavior of teens."

  13. Oh this really made me laugh, and then cry. Don't all generations say this but really...kids today are so different. The internet is a belssing and a curse, no doubt about it but I'm extremely glad I grew up in a generation where we learned to play outside and had to do homework in a library with an encyclopedia and most of our friends lived on our street. Too much open to interpretation and too many wackos out there in your face these days. They were always there before mind you, just no access to each other. Be safe and keep with that delete button!
