Is Summer Over

Where has summer gone?  At some point I'll upload my photos and report on our adventures.

School started this week in Hermiston.  No, I'm not longing to go back to school.  When I drive by the high school, I am reminded that I am blessed to not have to work.  We went camping instead.  We took the RV and the boat to the John Day River.  We thought that since school had started, the crowds would have thinned out.  Quite the opposite, the campground was filled with giant motor homes flying American flags and sporting satellite TV receivers, our peer group, retired people, were there in force.  But out on the river we rarely saw another boat.  This morning we took the boat up-river to Tumwater Falls.  We were the only people there.

I didn't take this picture; I forgot my camera.  I copied it from oregon.gov.

The rocks are worn smooth from the river.  This time of year there isn't much water coming over the rocks.  The river goes on for miles above the falls, but this is as far as we can go in the boat.

Heading back to camp we were alone in the beauty of Eastern Oregon.  We saw deer and lots of geese.  An osprey caught a fish in the middle of the river.  I am grateful for the beauty and the solitude.  We are fortunate in Oregon to have these public treasures, and I am blessed to have the time and resources to enjoy them.  It is  good to be retired!

  1. Coming and going without too much planning is the best part of retirement. Our time and schedule are our own.

  2. Yes, I hear you about retirement. I thought I might get tired of it, but now I can't figure out how I ever made room in my life for a full-time job! :-)

  3. A lovely tribute, both to your state and and your state. Looking forward to your summer adventures with the girls.

  4. As you suggest by your reaction to driving by the high school -- retired means never having to say that summer is over!

  5. How in the world did we ever have time to work?

  6. Beautiful pictures…One of the greatest benefits of retirement is flexibility in scheduling. One example - Summer is over - for most people! If the great weather continues, we can continue to enjoy summer as long as it lasts.

  9. Today we helped our daughter set up her classroom for another school year. It's hard for her and most of her colleagues to go back to work. We have had a beautiful summer. I am shocked when i realize I have been retired from teaching for nine years now! What a peaceful feeling it is to know I am done with back to school.

  10. The area where you went camping looks so peaceful. Oregon is a beautiful state. Sometimes I get bored with the “retired” routine. But when I think about the roller coaster life before retirement, I feel lucky to be able to have the luxury of not having to work anymore.

  12. I couldn't agree more! Had I known that retirement would be so fantastic, I'd have done years earlier...
I am also grateful to have enough to do most of the things I want to.

  13. Yes, it is good to be retired. I really thought I would go back to work this year. Nothing came of it. My hubby is working. I have decided it is good to just be a lady of leisure. I am embracing my retirement again.
