WTF Wednesday: God Works in Mysterious Ways

WTF Wednesday is a semi-regular feature of this blog. It documents the things that have made me pause, slap my forehead and say "What the f**k!" Well, that and I just like saying WTF. I'm retired. I don't have to watch what I say anymore. I'm not any one's role model.

A year or so ago my daughter and I were looking at DVDs when I noticed a cartoon series with vegetable characters called Veggie Tales.

"What kid would want to watch cartoon vegetables?" I commented to my daughter.

Readers who have small children have probably heard about Veggie Tales.  I had never heard of them and my daughter filled me in.  Veggie Tales is an animated series that features vegetables acting out Bible stories.

What the f**k?  Vegetables telling Bible stories?  ...and it's on TV?  ...and kids actually watch it?

This is not a joke.  The series exists and it is really cartoon vegetables acting out Bible stories like Daniel in the Lion's Den, or David and Goliath.

Can you imagine the production meeting where this idea was first proposed?

I know that God works in mysterious ways, but this one is more than mysterious; It's weird.

Nana did NOT buy the DVD for the granddaughters!

  1. I am familiar with the Veggie Tales series. Not because I have any of them, and come to think of it....I am not sure HOW I am aware of them.

But....I think the cucumber looks very very phallic, and that can't imagine that is a good thing.

  2. Well, there's really nothing wrong with it, is there?
Only thing I can think of is . . . when I was little we had a bull calf that I got to know well enough that when parts of him appeared on my plate, I had a little trouble eating him. What if my squash had been named Mary, Mother of God!?!?!?

  3. I had the same vague uneasy feeling years ago when I first saw Spongebob Square Pants.

  4. Yup I've heard of this series too because there are a lot of little ones that surround me in my life from nephews to friends' kids but I've never actually seen the production. Didn't know what it was based on. That's kind of...um, weird.

  5. Why? Is the message that the Bible is for vegetables? WTF is pretty accurate... rather amusing, too ...

  6. Preaching both nutrition and christian ideals--i guess they're trying to kill two birds with one stone? Traumatic when that tomato who's been telling you all about God's love gets disemboweled and cubed before your young eyes for greek salads though....

  7. I didn't know they were Bible stories. It does seem odd that they're on regular TV. Which veggie is Jesus I wonder. And what will watching this show do to kids when they go to take communion in later life. Yikes!

  8. Odd indeed! But then, Sesame Street is hard to replicate.

  9. I just feel sorry for today's kids that their parents have to depend on DVDs etc to teach children. More effective would be sitting down and teaching them how to read small words and increase their curiosity so they can strugle and eventually want to read the whole story themselves and at an appropriate age they can study faith and belief the proper way.

  10. Gee Bible and vegetables all in one bite. I wonder what they'll think of next.

  11. Don't kids dislike vegtables enough already?
