Where Have You Been, Nana?

I have a lot of good excuses for not posting lately.  Well, maybe they're not good excuses, but they are excuses!

My laptop crashed.  The hard drive had been growling for awhile, but all of a sudden it just stopped working at all.  Fortunately I had purchased an external hard drive just the week before and backed up all my files.  Now if only I knew how to "restore" all those files to the new laptop.

The printer died a few days later.  Like the laptop it just stopped turning on.  The blue light on the scanner glows, but everything else is dead.  I added a laser printer to my cart when I bought the laptop.

Buying the technology was the easy part.  I've spent hours getting software loaded and working.  And after crawling behind the desk to find the Internet connections, I had to dig out the vacuum to corral the dust bunnies that had multiplied since we last had to connect any wires.

No sooner was I back up to speed with technology and my oven decided to put on a light show.  My son walked into the kitchen and said, "Ahh, Mom, there are flames in the oven."  It was a spectacular ending to the oven heating element.  Fortunately the weather has been mild and we've been cooking our meals on the grill.  UPS delivered the new part this morning.

Why is that when one thing breaks, it starts a chain reaction.  Like dominoes falling, one after another, my appliances and tools have been breaking.  I guess it's another reminder that I'm not the only one getting older!

Tomorrow morning I leave for Italy.  It's my first trip there.  I am meeting my daughter who will be working in Milan for the next two weeks.  During the week I'll be on my own to see the sights, but on the weekend we've got plans to visit Venice and Verona.   I'm excited and nervous at the same time.   It's too late to learn Italian, but I'm up for the adventure.

  1. Ack, what do you mean, you were too busy extinguishing out the flames, to take any photo's for us? Shame on you! Some folk would give their perfectly good cooker element for such a blogging opporunity.. (mumble, mumble)

Oooh, I am SO jealous of your Italian trip, I've wonderful memories of all three of these locations, and would love to return. Do visit the Acropolis in Verona - it stages moonlit open air opera's there (sighhhhhh). To die for!

Please do remember to come back again.

  2. That is so true, when one thing breaks, it starts off a chain of events. I hope you have a wonderful time in Italy. What an awesome opportunity.

  3. When you go to Venice, be sure to take the elevator to the top of the Campanile, the big bell tower in St. Mark's square. It isn't expensive and the view is tremendous. Just don't go around noon. The sound of ringing bells was in my head for hours afterwards. Happy Easter.

  4. Your trip to Italy sounds fantastic! So sorry to hear about the broken appliances, etc. It's true though, we've experienced the same domino effect. In fact, now that it's been several years since the last one, I better stop thinking about it, as I'm sure we're due for a rash of break downs! Oh gosh, we're doomed! It's been about 15 years since the last fall out . . . maybe more? I lose track of time these days!

  5. Believe it or not I had noticed you were gone. I'm relieved to know you're still around. Wow, a trip to Italy, what fun. Have a wonderful time and worry about all that technology when you return.

  6. My dad used to have a saying: IPOIO. He would say each letter out loud, standing for "Innate Perversity Of Inanimate Objects" and I think you might have some idea what he's talking about. But you seem to be putting it all behind you and taking off for Parts Unknown. Take pictures! :-)

  8. I do sympathise with you having computer problems! When this computer was just over a year old the hard drive died! Fortunately, the computer guys were able to replace it and save all my files and pictures. Since then I've joined 'live drive' which is run by Google and which backs all my data on the Internet. I had an external hard drive a few years ago, but it, too, died and it was never possible to save the data.

Have a wonderful trip to Italy! One of my favourite places. Lucky me, I have a son who lives there -- an hour from Venice -- so we plan lots of visits!

  9. I had to replace a stove, and refrigerator and a hot water tank element in the last year. Not fun. and yes, there is so much work involved in replacing technology.
Italy is the one international trip that is still on my bucket list. This sounds like a wonderful opportunity for you!

  10. Replace oven with bedroom television and its almost word for word the week my aunt was having not more tahn 2 weeks ago! I think there must be something in the air, like a solar flare.

Luckily the air you'll be breathing soon will be full of glorious Italian smells! I'm envious, it is a place I've always wanted to travel. Enjoy the trip & time with your daughter!

  11. Have a fabulous time in Italy! I have been threatening to replace my computer, but the idea of facing down the dust bunnies behind the desk is more than I can bear.

  12. Technology is a great thing! Right up until the time that it stops working!
You may be back from your trip by now. If so, I hope you had a great time!
